2019 Annual Judicial Reception

On June 5th, we welcomed over 500 members of the Northeast Florida community to join us in honoring our judiciary and celebrating civility! The event was held in the US Assure Club West at TIAA Bank Field. Thank you to the judges, magistrates, hearing officers, judicial assistants, attorneys, and sponsors who joined us for our signature event! Thank you to our generous sponsors, this event would not be possible without your support!

Mentoring Program Kick-Off

We are starting a new mentoring program to pair young lawyers with experienced lawyers. We hosted a kick-off on May 21st at Intuition Ale Works for mentors and mentees to informally meet and network. 

May Luncheon: Spread Your Sunshine - Building Resiliency & Finding Joy

Attorney Melanie S. Griffin, founder of Spread Your Sunshine, spoke at our May luncheon about building resiliency and finding joy. An uplifting and empowering presentation for our last luncheon of the 2018-2019 membership year!

JWLA & St. JAWL Mixer

On April 23rd, JWLA & St. John's Association for Women Lawyers Members networked and connected at an informal mixer in Ponte Vedra Beach.

April Luncheon: Leveraging Your Personal Brand & Legal Skills on Social Media

Attorney, award-winning writer, and career and personal branding expert Wendi Weiner, The Writing Guru, taught attendees about building their personal brand and leveraging their legal skills through social media platforms including LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram.

Jacksonville CommUNITY Day

Judges, magistrates, and lawyers from across Northeast Florida joined together on April 6th for Jacksonville CommUNITY Day to volunteer at Feeding NE Florida. Volunteers inspected and sorted over 5,000 pounds of food for families in need in our community. Funded by a grant from The Florida Bar. 

Movie Night: The Judge Film

JWLA members and their guests enjoyed a special screening of "The Judge" film at WJCT Studios. The Judge is a documentary that offers a unique portrait of Judge Kholoud Al-Faqih, first woman judge appointed to the Middle East's Shari'a courts, her brave journey as a lawyer, and her tireless fight for justice for women. Sponsored by LAWCLERK

March Luncheon: Women Lawyers in Jax - Past, Present, Future

In celebration of Women's History Month, we took a look into the past, present, and future of women lawyers in Jacksonville. Members heard about the history of women lawyers in Jacksonville and how our panelists signficantly advanced the cause of women lawyers in Jacksonville. This 1 hour CLE program was made possible in part by a grant from The Florida Bar Young Lawyers Division.

After 5 Mixer at Phipps Reporting

JWLA members and guests networked, mixed, and mingled at the new Phipps Reporting office in downtown Jacksonville. The event was sponosred by Phipps Reporting.

Team JWLA at the JBA/YLS Chili Cook-Off

Team JWLA took home the top award for "meatiest" chili and 3rd place overall in the 2019 JBA/YLS Charity Chili Cook-Off, which raised over $15,000 for Best Buddies! Thanks to our sponsors Cline's Custom Meats, Carroll's Meat Shoppe, and Pinegrove Market & Deli!

February 2019 Luncheon: Dos and Don'ts of Salary Negotiation

Team JWLA at the JBA Sporting Clays Tournament

JWLA fielded two teams of four shooters in the JBA Sporting Clays Tournament on February 1, 2019. Proceeds of the event benefited Three Rivers Legal Services.

Reception for New Judges at the Makar Home

JWLA members had an opportunity to meet the newly elected judges in the 4th Judicial Circuit in January. The event was hosted by Judge Scott Makar, First District Court of Appeal; Nancy Hogshead-Makar, CEO of Champion Women! Funded in part by a professionalism grant from The Florida Bar YLD.

January 2019 Luncheon: Advancing your Career and the Community through Board Service

Panelists Giselle Carson, Ramona Chaplin, and Karen Bowling spoke about board service on a panel moderated by Rena Coughling, CEO of the Nonprofit Center of Northeast Florida. Members learned about why board service is important, how to serve on boards, and why it is valuable.

Spreading holiday cheer! The JWLA Holiday Project Committee hosted a party for low-income seniors at Centennial Towers to deliver gifts to residents with JWLA Member Judge Gary Flower. Made possible by a grant from The Florida Bar YLD.

JWLA Runs Jax with 1st Place Sports Running

Proud to see our "JWLA Runs Jax" running group cross the finish line at the Ameris 5k! This running program was for beginners on up, some of these ladies finished their very first race, congrats!

2nd Annual Bubbles & Bakes Holiday Party

Our "Bubbles & Bakes" cookie baking contest and holiday party sponsored by Nelson Mullins was a fun night for our members to mix, mingle, and show off their baking skills! Congratulations to the winners of our cookie contest!

On November 14th, nearly 100 JWLA members and guests mixed and mingled at a networking reception at Morton's The Steakhouse in the Hyatt on the riverwalk.  The event was sponsored by Morton's The Steakhouse and Attorney at Law Magazine First Coast.

Workshop: The Power of Body Language

On October 24th, we hosted a members-only workshop focusing on body language, including micro-expressions and nonverbal cues, taught by Megan Ritchie owner of Nonverbal Consulting, LLC.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

On October 13th, Team JWLA participated in the Making Strides for Breast Cancer walk with special guests, Florida Supreme Court Justices Barbara J. Pariente and Peggy A. Quince.

 

Almost everyone has been affected by breast cancer in some way, so JWLA has decided to make a difference by walking and raising money in our local American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event.

Preventing Sexual Harassment in the Legal Profession CLE

On August 23rd, during this interactive program, "Green Dot" trainers from the Women's Center of Jacksonville provided attendees with the tools to be proactive bystanders when confronting sexual harassement and assualt in the legal profession.  FREE 2 hour bias elimination CLE. On June 6th, at JWLA's signature annual event, 500 judges, judicial assistants, and lawyers from across the came together at TIAA Bank Field to celebrate the judiciary and celebrate civility! Thank you to our generous sponsors for making this event possible.

May Happy Hour with the St. Johns Association of Women Lawyers

On May 17, 2018, JWLA and the St. Johns Association of Women Lawyers combined forces for a networking event sponsored by Dr. Kalpana DePasquale at Moxie Kitchen & Cocktails!

 

Dr. Kalpana DePasquale, a board certified Otolaryngologist and Facial Plastic Surgeon specializing in sinus and voice issues as well as minimally invasive options, offered attendees free samples and information about her practice.

On May 10, 2018 JWLA luncheon attendees heard from local in-house counsel during JWLA's May Luncheon and learned tips on how to "Be Heard in the Boardroom."

April 2018 Luncheon: "GOOD Guys"

 On April 12, 2018, JWLA members heard from local community leaders and key players in hiring, promotion, and pay decisions discuss their efforts to advance women and diverse lawyers during the “GOOD Guys” (Guys (and Gals!) Overcoming Obstacles to Diversity) luncheon.

March 2018 Luncheon: "Be Heard in the Bar"

On March 8, 2018, JWLA hosted a luncheon featuring a presentation by Michael Higer, Florida Bar President, on the Gender Bias Task Force.  The Woman Lawyer of the Year Award was also presented to The Honorable Michelle Kalil!

On March 4, 2018, the graduating class of the JWLA Golf Academy and other lawyers participated in the first ever JWLA Golf Scramble at Blue Sky Golf Club! 

February 2018 Luncheon: "Be Heard in front of the JNC and Beyond"

On February 8, 2018, JWLA hosted a luncheon which featured presentations by Daniel Nordby and Meredith Sasso, Office of Governor Rick Scott, and Michelle Bedoya Barnett, co-founder of Alexander DeGance Barnett.  The speakers discussed the Judicial Nominating Commission (JNC) process, including the judicial candidate application process, reviewing and vetting the applications, tips on completing the judicial candidate application, identifying common issues, ethical restraints, landing an interview spot, interviewing in front of the JNC, and current problems affecting the JNCs in general.

New Year's Happy Hour with Women Mediators

On Tuesday, January 16, JWLA hosted a happy hour with the women mediators of Jacksonville and learned about their skills, qualifications, and areas of practice. The event took place at the Candy Apple Cafe, one of Jacksonville’s most popular restaurants and after-hours locations.  JWLA thanks Lisa A. Dasher of Jacksonville Family Mediation and Penny W. Schmidt of Schutt, Schmidt & Noey Mediation Center for their generous sponsorship of this event!

January 2018 Luncheon: "Be Heard at the Polls"

On January 11, 2018, JWLA members gathered for the first luncheon of the new year and witnessed a discussion on the judicial election process and its ethical complexities. Presentations were given by Mike Hogan, Supervisor of Elections, and the Honorable Roberto Arias, Chair of Election Subcommittee of the Judicial Ethics Advisory Committee.

Unity Day Luncheon

On January 4, 2018, members of JWLA, the D.W. Perkins Bar Association, Jacksonville Asian American Bar Association, Jacksonville Bar Association, and Jacksonville Chapter of the Federal Bar Association joined together at River City Brewing Company for an inaugural Unity Day Luncheon in honor of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. The event included an address from our keynote speaker, Michael Higer, Esq., President of The Florida Bar and a panel discussion from area bar leaders (including our own Jennifer Richardson) which included topics such as bridging gaps between groups in our community, strengthening and uniting as members of The Florida Bar, and encouraging collaborations between various bar associations.  A special thank you to The Florida Bar-Diversity and Inclusion Grant and the Bench Bar Fund of The United States District Court of the Middle District of Florida for their generous sponsorship of this event.

Bubbles & Bakes Holiday Party

On December 6, 2017, JWLA hosted its annual members only holiday party at Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP.  This year, the event was a champagne reception with a homemade cookie competition and exchange!   Attendees brought cookies to submit to the competition, and best tasting, best presentation, and best overall cookie awards were given out. A great time was had by all!

November 2017 Luncheon: "Be Heard in Government"

On November 9, 2017, JWLA hosted a moderated panel discussion on effective lobbying skills and issues to watch impacting women with Senator Audrey Gibson, Erika Alba, Public Affairs Director, Foley & Lardner LLP and  Lori Boyer, Jacksonville City Council President, 2016-2017.

Ribbon Cutting for the Nursing Lounge at the Courthouse!

On November, 1, 2017, JWLA hosted the Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening of the Nursing Lounge at the Duval County Courthouse, and was honored to have Chief Judge Mark H. Mahon lead the event.

 

JWLA is proud to have secured Room 4318 to be used by individuals doing business in the Courthouse as a private, safe, and sanitary sanctuary to nurse, pump, and care for their young children.  JWLA thanks Harris Guidi Rosner, P.A. for its generous donation to this initiative.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

On October 21, 2017 JWLA participated in the Making Strides for Breast Cancer walk at Metropolitan Park.   JWLA  members came out in force to walk, and we were also in the top 10% for fundraising!  Thank you everyone for your support of this great event!

October 2017 Luncheon: "Be Heard in FAWL" with FAWL President Jennifer Sullivan

JWLA's first CLE Luncheon of the year, featuring FAWL President Jennifer Sullivan, was held on October 12, 2017, where members heard about FAWL's agenda for the year and the state of women lawyers in Florida. 

Overcoming the Impact of Implicit Bias Luncheon

On August 15, 2017, the D.W. Perkins Bar, Jacksonville Chapter of the Federal Bar Association and JWLA hosted a special lunch presentation by Dr. Kate Ratliff, an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Florida and the Executive Director of Project Implicit. Project Implicit is a non-profit organization and international collaborative network of researchers investigating implicit social cognition—thoughts and feelings that exist outside of conscious awareness or conscious control. Dr. Ratliff’s work provides scientific understanding of how implicit biases form and how they influence judgment and behavior. She also provides training for organizations seeking to reduce the consequences of implicit biases in their operations and has worked with clients such as World Bank.

2017 Opening Reception

On September 20, 2017, JWLA hosted an Opening Reception to kick off the 2017-2018 year.   We had a great turnout at this event, which was free to members, who were able to network, socialize, and learn about all of the exciting things to come in the year ahead.
